Default New player, question about item values pre-Searing vs post-Searing

Good evening,

I am new to GW, having picked it up over the holiday weekend. I have played for a few hours, and I think I am ready to go to the Academy and into post-Searing Ascalon. My question is about items...is there anything in particular I should stock up on before I make the switch? I know that dyes are valuable, but what about things like Belt Pouches? They sell for 5G to a merchant in pre-Searing. Are they more valuable in post-Searing? What about Red Iris flowers, any value there or just sell them now? Anything else?

Thanks,
James

They all have the same value, but if you have dyes you must always keep them until post searing and sell them to the trader then.
And some people MIGHT buy red iris flowers, but it's a low chance. Just merchant the rest. Have a nice time in GW.

There are a few things you should stock up on before going to post.

Firstly, make sure you have plenty of gold, and maybe some crafting materials like cloth, tanned hide and iron. You'll need these to buy some better armor. It is easier to get cash in pre than in the early stages of post, so stick around and kill off those weaker monsters (salvage some of the loot they drop as well for materials) until you feel like you've amassed your own small fortune (2000 gold is more than enough for most people, and you may not even need that much depending on how many materials you can salvage before leaving)

If you've found any dyes in pre, do not sell them to merchants. Ever. You can get a lot more money for them by selling them to special dye traders, which you will find when you go to post.

In general, the sell value for belt pouches and thing you pick up remain the same in pre and post. Though when it comes to the red iris flowers, give them all to Gwen before you go to post. Once you give her enough, she'll give you a Tapestry Shred (which you will want if you plan to add Eye of the North to your game account, and this is the only way to get a tapestry shred).

Thanks for the welcome, and for your help. I went over to post-Searing today. They weren't kidding when they said it was different. But I feel like I prepared well. I was able to buy the 30 AV armor, and a storage chest w material upgrade. I have a fairly good stash of materials going, and I have several bottles of dye that I haven't sold yet. I've done a few quests and some exploring, and figured out that the Charr bands are tough!

One question about dye. I tried out the "preview" of different dye colors on my new armor, and it seems like it only allows you to change the trim color. Is there a way to change the main area color?

Thanks,
James

Different armors have different dye-able areas. Several have only dye-able trims, while others are dye-able in the main area. You might want to look on gw.gamewikis.org/wiki/Main_Page and click the armor link to look at dye-able areas on armor.

Dyeable isn't a word, right?

It think Charr hide drops easier in Pre-Searing than in Post-Searing, there is a collector for them in Ascalon City.

Don't buy more than one belt pouch, each character can only ever have one. (You shouldn't have bought one either, I believe there are 2 collectors who do belt pouches.)

Try to get Gwen's Tapestry shred, by doing her non-quest.

If you want a cash boost in post go solo farm spiders for webs. If you take webs in post and use a expert salvage kit, you'll get silk 95% of the time. Entering post with stacks of silk(or silk-to-be) can give you a leg up in getting your first set of armour. Of course if you have a decent stash already, this is probably not worth your time.

Values of items are the same in both Pre-Searing and Post-Searing. Only, some items might get different values from other players, because the items get special. Like a flute, which you wont get in Post. Or like Charr Bags. Dyes are also of same worth at merchants, 1 gold. But now you can sell them to Dye Traders, who will offer more money for a dye.
